About

The reason for the decision

In law, the ratio decidendi is the part of a judgment that decides the case: the reasoning the outcome stands on, as opposed to everything said in passing. It is a fair description of what we sell.

Ratio Decidendi is an independent market-intelligence consultancy, established in London in 2015. We advise investors, companies and governments on decisions that carry consequence: acquisitions, fundraises, market entries and investment policy.

What we do

The work is research. We size markets, test business cases, interview customers and take apart competitive environments, then turn what we find into guidance a decision-maker can act on. Our niche is M&A market analysis: independent vendor due-diligence packs and fundraising support, alongside market assessments, feasibility studies and voice-of-customer research.

How we work

Engagements are collaborative and built around the decision in front of you. We show our sources. We put the ugly scenario on the page next to the flattering one, and where the evidence is thin we say so rather than smooth it over. The aim is analysis you can defend in front of a board, an investment committee or a government department.

Who we work for

We work with companies, investors and governments, from early-stage start-ups to established institutions. Clients include News Corp, Experian, KAO DATA, IHG and the NHS. Much of the work is confidential; the engagements we can talk about are on the Selected work page.

We are a deliberately small firm, and we like it that way: the people who do the analysis are the people in the room. If you are an exceptional researcher, we are always glad to hear from you. Introduce yourself through the enquiry form.
